Pastor: God Destroyed New Orleans

Agape Press, the publishing division of the American Family Association, issued a press release Friday quoting a New Orleans pastor who celebrates the devastation in New Orleans for wiping out "much of the rampant sin common to the city."

Rev. Bill Shanks, pastor of New Covenant Fellowship of New Orleans in Metairie, said that he warned for years God would pass judgment on the city:

New Orleans now is abortion free. New Orleans now is Mardi Gras free. New Orleans now is free of Southern Decadence and the sodomites, the witchcraft workers, false religion -- it's free of all of those things now. God simply, I believe, in His mercy purged all of that stuff out of there -- and now we're going to start over again. ...

It's time for us to stand up against wickedness so that God won't have to deal with that wickedness.

More than 10,000 people are feared dead in Louisiana after the landfall of Hurricane Katrina and six days of severe privation in the flooded city of New Orleans.

Southern Decadence, a yearly gay pride event expected to bring 100,000 people to the French Quarter this year, had been scheduled to occur from Aug. 30 through Sept. 5.

Shanks, who has protested at abortion clinics, the ACLU, and Southern Decadence, told Associated Press in 2004 that legalization of same-sex marriage would doom the city:

One Category 5 hurricane coming up the river will take care of all Sodomite marriages ... I believe this will open the floodgate for God to bring judgment on our land.

He also prophesied an end to murder in New Orleans during a 2004 gathering of Operation Rescue if abortion clinics shut down.

Shanks and some members of his church evacuated to the High Place Campsite in Florence, Miss., according to an Operation Rescue web site affiliated with the pastor.

All I can say is don't mess with
God. The beginning of wisdom is the fear of God. Humble yourself under the mighty hand of God and He will lift you up. Only God knows why He allowed this terrible disaster with Katrina. The Bible is against homosexuality, lewdness, witchcraft, and abortion. And mentions many times about natural disasters happening as the judgement from God in response to unrepented sin. If you want the truth of whether there is a God. Ask God to show you the truth, and He will. I know God is real. There has been too many supernatural occurences in my life. All I can say is don't piss God off. I did and saw firsthand the devastation he can bring - the entire bedroom wall made of glass shattered into tiny fragments in a split second. I thought the wind blew my lamp down and it shattered. When I walked into the room I knew in my heart that God was pissed off. The wall thing happended in a split second after praying to God and telling him he was unjust. My neighbors and I were shocked as you can imagine. That was the last time I raised my fist to God in anger. You might think that could be from a natural occurence like a rock thrown into the glass or a bird flying into the glass wall, thats what I thought but there were no signs of rocks, objects, birds, etc. Even the police were unable to explain what happened. But I knew it was God. And that He loves me and corrected me when I was wrong. Just as He loves and corrects those who don't listen to Him and don't do what the Bible says. The Bible says you must be born again. The Bible says, "today is the day of salvation"! Don't wait until its too late. Jesus loves you, God loves you. Just say Jesus come into my heart today, and He will. And I can say, your life will not be the same. You will have peace that cannot be explained!

Please. Put the old testament down for a moment, and start using your brain. Do you think God is really going around killing people? Sodom and Gomorrah happened well before Christ's death on the cross, which transformed sin into a personal thing between the sinner and his god. It sounds like you all just don't get that the whole vengeful God thing is part of the past. It's up to you to live the way Christ taught (NEW testament trumps the old, boneheads), and I think Jesus would slap you in your selfish face for celebrating the death of thousands because you're freaked out by gay people. Besides, most of the dead are black, poor, non-Southern Decadence celebrants - you'd think a vengeful God would have better aim. I mean, he didn't *used to* slaughter people who had nothing at all to do with his righteous anger. Anyway, I'm offering up a simple prayer that you all stop being so stupid, and think possibly about showing the humanity and compassion of Christ to those who have suffered, and leave the judgement to God, where it belongs.

I personally lived through two natural disasters, (the snow storms of 1967 and 1977) and two race riots-the Long Hot Summer of '67 and the Martin Luther King Jr. Assassination Riots. During those frightening days and sometimes nights, trapped smack dab in the middle of a West Side Chicago ghetto with the Vice Lords and other street gangs around to make things even worse, I can tell you that some Black people around me behaved badly-to put it mildly.

Most of us did not.

Back then I don't recall Harry Belafonte, Sidney Portier, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Bill Cosby, or Dick Gregory ignoring the bullets being shot by Black people at Black people so they could grind on about racism. I don't remember singers or groups like Marvin Gaye, The Temptations or the Four Tops ranting about how much our government "doesn't love Black people." Instead, they used their forum to call for peace and calmness in the face of chaos.

Right now, the nation and most of the world is once again being slapped in the face with horrific images of many Black people falling apart and dying in the wake of one of the worst Hurricanes in history. It's sad. But what is worse are how our so-called Black leaders are responding to the crisis.

I have heard a Black mayor screaming obscenities at the White House. I have heard Black singers saying that our President doesn't love Black people. I have heard every thing coming from the mouths of ministers, politicians and entertainers, except one little word: RESPONSIBILITY.

I think it's disgusting-especially in the face of the hard, cold facts concerning New Orleans.

Experts: Models predicted New Orleans disaster

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Virtually everything that has happened in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina struck was predicted by experts and in computer models, so emergency management specialists wonder why authorities were so unprepared.
"The scenario of a major hurricane hitting New Orleans was well anticipated, predicted and drilled around," said Clare Rubin, an emergency management consultant who also teaches at the Institute for Crisis, Disaster, and Risk Management at George Washington University.
Computer models developed at Louisiana State University and other institutions made detailed projections of what would happen if water flowed over the levees protecting the city or if they failed.
In July 2004, more than 40 federal, state, local and volunteer organizations practiced this very scenario in a five-day simulation code-named "Hurricane Pam", where they had to deal with an imaginary storm that destroyed over half a million buildings in New Orleans and forced the evacuation of a million residents.
At the end of the exercise Ron Castleman, regional director for the Federal Emergency Management Agency declared: "We made great progress this week in our preparedness efforts.
"Disaster response teams developed action plans in critical areas such as search and rescue, medical care, sheltering, temporary housing, school restoration and debris management. These plans are essential for quick response to a hurricane but will also help in other emergencies," he said.
In light of that, said disaster expert Bill Waugh of Georgia State University, "It's inexplicable how unprepared for the flooding they were." He said a slow decline over several years in funding for emergency management was partly to blame.

QUESTION: SINCE THE CITY AND STATE OFFICIALS KNEW WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE FACE OF HURRICANE KATRINA, WHERE WERE THE SUPPLIES AND THE MONEY FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE SUPERDOME?

That same week marked the beginning of New Orleans' 34th Annual "Southern Decadence", which according to the organizers welcomed 125,000 people into New Orleans for a week of "sexual excess." It was supposed to kick off on August 31, 2005.

Ray Nagin, that angry mayor we saw on TV, raging at the White House somehow managed to organize food, water and beds for thousands of people coming in for a sexual fest. He even had an official welcome ready a week before Katrina hit. Yet, this same politician couldn't figure out how to place enough food, water and medical care for half that number in the place they had designated for a disaster shelter. Why?
FACT: NEW ORLEANS HAD A LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENT. WHERE WERE THEY?

Many of the police officers were reported as taking off their badges and simply not reporting for duty when things began to fall apart.

New Orleans Police Department Status: The situation for the NOPD is critical. This is firsthand information I have from an NOPD officer we're giving shelter to. Their command and control infrastructure is shot. They have limited to no communication whatsoever. He didn't even know the city was under martial law until we told him! His precinct (5th Precinct) is underwater! UNDERWATER -- every vehicle underwater. They had to commander moving trucks like Ryder and U-Haul to get around. The coroner's office is shut down so bodies are being covered in leaves at best or left where they lie at worst.
They don't even know their own rules of engagement. He says the force is impotent right now. They have no idea what's going on, no coordination, virtually no comms, etc. the National Guard is gonna airdrop a radio system for them with 200 radios? They are getting very little direction.
The 3rd District bugged out to Baton Rouge because they flooded out.

Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005 10:21 a.m. EDT New Orleans Cops Join in Looting A handful of police in hurricane-ravaged New Orleans joined with looters yesterday in cleaning out store shelves and pilfering merchandise that had nothing to do with survival. While the overwhelming majority of Big Easy cops were performing admirably under staggeringly difficult circumstances, an NBC camera crew filming looters at a local Wal-Mart captured two policewomen filling a shopping cart to the brim with shoes.
Asked what she was doing, one of the unidentified officers told reporter Martin Savidge: "I'm just doing my job" Her partner apparently continued looting unfazed by NBC's presence.
The New Orleans Times-Picayune also carried reports of police looting, noting in Wednesday editions:
"Some officers joined in taking whatever they could, including one New Orleans cop who loaded a shopping cart with a compact computer and a 27-inch flat screen television. Officers claimed there was nothing they could do to contain the anarchy, saying their radio communications had broken down and they had no direction from commanders."
"We don't have enough cops to stop it," one beleaguered cop told the paper. "A mass riot would break out if you tried."

DAVID MARK: New Orleans citizen, Raymond Cooper, told CNN the situation was dire.

RAYMOND COOPER: When we got here there was no one to tell us what to do, no one to direct us, no authority figure. They had a couple of policemen out here, about six or seven policemen told me directly when I went to tell them, hey man, you've got bodies in there, you've got two old ladies that just passed, just had died, people dragging the bodies into little corners.

One guy, that's how I found out. The guy had said, hey man, anybody sleeping over here? I'm like, no. He dragged two bodies in there. Now I just found out there was a lady and an old man. The lady went to nudge him. He's dead. And (inaudible) bodies. And you've got these young teenage bodies running around, they're raping these girls.

DAVID MARK: And the authorities don't appear to know what's happening.

QUESTION: WAS THIS LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT INCOMPETENCE THE FAULT OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT?
NO. And quite a few of the officers who should have been out saving civilians were just as Black as I am. Yet, they refused to save Black people. Where was their "love?"

FACT: MANY OF THE RESCUERS WERE UNABLE TO GET NEAR THE SICK, THE ELDERLY OR THE STRANDED, BECAUSE SNIPERS AND LOOTERS WERE SHOOTING AT THEM.
Many volunteers risked their lives to rescue residents stranded in and atop their homes. Other people selflessly shared what little necessities they had on hand.
But food, fresh water and medicine soon grew scarce. Thousands of hungry and tired storm victims became restless waiting for buses to evacuate them from the ruined city. In the midst of this desperate situation, human nature reared its ugly head.
Fights broke out. Police were fired upon. Vehicles were carjacked. Stores were looted. Women were raped in the restrooms of the Superdome. Every New Orleans hospital reported that, as evacuation helicopters tried to land, people shot at them, shouting, "You better come get my family." At two hospitals, patients had to be moved to higher floors to escape looters. Because street gangs and other criminals vastly outnumbered the police, National Guardsmen had to be sent in to help restore order. Despite this, a National Guard military policeman was shot in the leg as a man scuffled with him for the MP's rifle. Rescuers in boats and helicopters had to suspend rescue operations when their valiant efforts were met with gunfire. ("The Real Truth")
QUESTION: WHAT COLORS WERE THE PEOPLE SHOOTING AT THE RESCUERS? WHAT COLORS WERE THE RAPISTS? DID THEY COME FROM THE WHITE HOUSE OR WERE THEY LOCAL?

The people with guns weren't forcing their way out so they can live, but running wild so people can die. Black and White people tried airlifting out the sick and the dying. But, snipers shot at them. Black snipers.

What does it say about our values as a culture when we shoot ourselves?

The singer, Kanye West says, "George Bush doesn't care about Black people." Well, the Black people in that city and in that dome had every opportunity to care about each other as Black people right then and right there and for the most part they failed to care at all.

We, as a people used to hold ourselves responsible for our own behavior. Our elders said, "Clean up your own backyard, before you start pitching a fit at someone else's mess next door." Back then we didn't blame good or bad White people for bad Black behavior.
I think it is time that we followed that advice and started taking a good, hard look at what we are responsible for in our own lives.

It is easy to blame the people in Washington D.C. for the chaos in New Orleans. But the FACTS are that both the White and the Black politicians in the Big Easy have known for years that their ability to respond to a hurricane or flood was pathetic. The morals and civic honesty in that town with cesspool like factories and a sex trade that featured live Triple X shows with animals and children were a joke. No one cared about this underbelly of laziness and corruption when the sun was shining. But the storm suddenly turned the world's attention to New Orleans and what we are seeing isn't very pretty.

In the aftermath, we need to ask some questions about local responsibility. Where was the money that the local government had allotted for hurricane preparations? It certainly didn't end up in the Superdome. Where was the local, financial in terms of support for the levees and gas for the buses that could have evacuated the people still left in the town before the levees broke? That was discussed in the many pages of reports written before the disaster. Why weren't they implemented?

1) There was local and state money available to purchase what was needed days before that storm hit. WHY WASN'T THAT USED? HOW WAS THAT SPENT?

2) There were buses and trains ready to take everyone out of the city.
WHY WASN'T THAT DONE? WHO WAS LOCALLY IN CHARGE?

3) There were enough people and guns able to band together and protect each other when the rapes and the looting started. WHY DIDN'T THE PEOPLE PROTECT THE WEAK AND INNOCENT?

I mentioned that I had been through four instances of both natural and manmade disasters. I survived rioting and looting many years ago because Black people stopped blaming the "Big House" and took care of our own, instead of shooting each other.

And then, once the smoke cleared, many people wanted to blame the officials somewhere else for they saw as an inadequate response to our problems. But in Chicago's case back in 1977, we found that the money earmarked to clean up our natural snow disasters turned up in the pockets of many of the local officials who were supposed to be in charge of emergency preparedness.

Could we have the same situation in New Orleans 2005? Could there be money earmarked for hurricane response missing from the local coffers? Is anyone going to ask at all? Or is that being too politically incorrect?

When a super storm came to one of our biggest cities, our Black leadership was found to be inadequate in every way. It's time to repent, Black America! It's time to get back to our old values and do what's right instead following after Sodom and Gomorrah.

Here is food for thought.

I think that the disaster that happened to New Orleans and surrounding areas was the judgement of God and here is why I think so...

1. The disengagement... America's participation in it and our support of it.

2. The rampant sin, homosexuality, abortion, lawlessness, loss of the fear of God.

3. We kicked God out. (this nation was founded on Godly principals) In the beginning of our beloved nation God blessed our country, it grew and prospered, God had a protective hedge around us. but now... people are crying "take IN GOD WE TRUST off of our currency, take UNDER GOD out of our pledge, take prayer out of our schools, take down the ten commandments from our courts... get the picture? we have kicked God out. He, being the gentleman that he is, left... and we he did... down came the hedges of protection.

I don't believe that God "Done it" but I believe that he stepped back and allowed it to happen. We can't have it both ways... we can't say one moment oh God help us... and the next moment... we don't need God.

Jesus Christ is alive and well... he is not up there scratching his head wondering "What is going on"... he is in control. Let him have control of you.

Ask Jesus to come into your heart and forgive you of your sin and turn from sin. He will answer your prayer. He will come into your heart, he will forgive your sin and you will be born again.

Jesus is coming soon... friend... please don't be blinded... Every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Isn't it so much better to come out of love and with a willing spirit of love than to do so later out of fear of upcoming judgement on your soul

Wow, God must be getting old or weak. The god I studied about in church was all powerful! If he wanted to wipe out New Orleans and the evil doers there he seems to have missed. The French Quarter, which most would agree is where most of the "bad" stuff goes on only suffered wind damage and will live on! The poor people of New Orleans however, got the worse of "gods wrath". Wonder what they did to him? Those poor people from Mississippi, tragic that they were just in the way of god's attempt at destroying New Orleans ... I think God was punishing the south for being supporters of a murdering corrupt coward named dubya. God alsoprobably wasn't too happy about the number of golden calfs like Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell and other agents of satan that the south worships.

It was a warning and a judgment. This is only the beginning of sorrows. The earthquake unparalleled in one hundred years causing a tsunami that shifted the earth's axis a jot of a degree and wiped out islands and peoples, in the aftermath (emphasis on aftermath) of a hurricane levees break and floodwaters rise, and another hurricane lazily skirts the coastline proving the Lord can do anything and we should rely on Him for His graces and mercies in the Lord Jesus Christ, His only Begotten Son. The catastophe of New Orleans was also as much a sign of mercy in that it was spared a direct hit contrary to expectations. But why the focus on that city that harbored unrepentant rapists, thieves, liars, witches, and sexual immorality and furthermore celebrated all these things? What about other towns and cities along the coasts of Louisiana and Mississippi? There are other people suffering who deserve as much care and love and assistance. Stop focusing on a city laid waste. I would prefer the port not to be rebuilt, but as I am not of this world, my concern is with the children left parentless, the people left homeless, jobless, the victims of abuse from those who thrived on vigilante chaos and destruction (they who hurt the innocent have their reward unless they too repent), and on the poor who were not afforded the attentions or luxuries of the wealthy in evacuation (face it, if you can't pay all your bills on time, how can you afford to make arrangements to stay at a hotel/motel or rent a car to evacuate?). The news organizations all owned by a few rich people who are so focused on the city of New Orleans where an abundance of their wealth may come through, which is as decadent as Las Vegas. Nevertheless, let our focus as the sons and daughters of God thanks to the Lord Jesus (blessed is His name forever and ever) be on the small towns and parishes where people are struggling independently due to gov't intervention only in the city (in part due to concentration of wealth there); and let us begin praying the Lord to send His workers and if called to do so, may He grant us the courage, the faith and the desire to go and do His work in ministering both to the physical and spiritual needs of the saints of God and to the unbelievers that they might come to see the love of Christ Jesus in us and then come to Him for salvation from their sins. All be to the glory of the Lord God Almight in our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ.

I just wanted to find a place to say that as a very ordinary person living far away from you all in NO, never having been there myself etc that I pray the LORD will help you to stand firm in Him, the solid rock. The LORD longs to save all who would turn to him and I pray many will realise his great love and mercy through their misery, pain and grief in the aftermath of these hurricanes, wherever they happen in America. I am proud of Christians who are bold and stand for God's truth and call sin, sin. I feel sorry for those who responded at the beginning of these comments who do not know peace, contentment, joy and love through a deep satisfying relationship with Christ, himself.

I want to encourage you Christians in NO to deal first with any sin in your own lives so that you can be used by God in an amazing way in these days to bring hope and life to many who are now destitute. Let your lives reflect God's glory by surrendering all to Him.

Helen Keller once said that without the darkness of the skies, one would not see the brilliance of the stars. Without things like hurricanes, cancer, etc would we really see how good Good is? Would we really understand how evil Evil is? I use devastation like Katrina to make me value God more; as I see how fleeting life and possessions are, I appreciate what He offers as a Savior more and more.

I think the Rev who preaches about Katrina being God's judgement needs to be very very careful. God tells us not to rejoice when sudden calamity comes upon others. We should grieve for them and be on our face thankful that we ourselves have been rescued. We should also speak about other attributes of God... for "the kindness of the Lord leads to repentance". We should be careful not to speak too quickly about those who were affected as if "they" were all sinners... for many Christians who love Jesus are being gang-raped and are dying in Sudan. Learning from Job we can say that sometimes very righteous people receive trials that are overwhelming. Let us not be persumptuous and assume we know with certainty who God is judging and who He is not....He tells us very clearly that He is allowing the tares and the wheat to grow up together and one day at the Harvest we will know who is what. He WILL "judge both the living and the dead" and for that I am sobered, because I must stand before Him claiming only Jesus as my Hope. I am a sinner, though forgiven. I have nothing to be proud about.

I applaud Pastor Timelda's post on so many points. Although I am white, I have a great heart for racial reconciliation and was groaning at the wasted opportunities self-appointed "Black leaders" made.

If you think the disaster in New Orleans was due to the acts of people you should be committed in an asylum for the insane. How do you explain natural disasters on other planets, which, so far as we know has no life? Are you really stupid enough to believe that there were no such disasters on this planet many ages before man ever sat foot upon it? Everyone in the entire world cannot be bad enough to cause a storm, nor can they be good enough, pray loud enough and long enough to prevent a storm.

One can actually make a very rational argument, from the facts alone, that New Orleans was destroyed for disobeying the will of God... one just has to be willing to define "God" broadly.

Bear with me for a moment:

Why was New Orleans destroyed, according to the actual facts of the situation? Well, it was destroyed because the levees flooded it.

Why did the levees flood it? First, because both the city and the levees are constantly below sea level, and secondly because of the amount of rain absorbed by the lake and the River Mississippi.

Why was the city sinking below sea level? Because the land the city was built on had historically been renewed by the annual flooding cycle of the Mississippi. When the river was dammed (damned?) and harnassed to the will of mankind, this flooding stopped. So the city started to sink.

Why was there so much rain? Because the barrier islands and wetlands that ordinarily absorb rain in such an event had been destroyed when the river was dammed and by subsequent development.

So, in summary, why did the levees break and flood New Orleans? because men altered the cycles of nature. If the engineers who had worked to protect New Orleans had contrived to do so without thwarting the natural progression of the Mississippi, this would not have happened.

Now, what are the cycles of nature according to theistic faith since the dawn of time? Well, they are the dictates of God(s). In fact, the Mississippi has been called the Nile of America... one recalls that in ancient Egyptian lore the Nile was considered a primary aspect of the sacred, and that damming it was considered to be one of the unpardonable sins.

Why was New Orleans destroyed? Because of the hubris --and, one ought add, the carelessness-- of a corps of army engineers who thought they could overcome the laws of a God. There may not be evidence that some angry God decided to smite the city for abortion and homosexuality... (in fact, that seems like an absurd suggestion for the "cause" of this "effect) but the evidence is irrefutable that the city's fate was a direct result of breaking the natural laws which our ancient ancestors recognized as divine.

When we hear that "God works in mysterious ways," we ought not assume that this means "ways which make no sense," but rather "ways which we do not have the science to fully control and predict..." --ways that may include the flow of a mighty river.

PS -- This is not to say that the people of New Orleans deserved what they got. I had planned to move there to teach in the next year or two, and I deeply regret the loss of the city.... But if myth and history teaches us anything, it is that those who pay the penalty of "sins" are very seldom those who knowingly committed it.

You do realize that Christians were killed as well, don't you? This was a HURRICANE, not and act of god. He didn't condemn them, he was trying to show them "the everlasting love of god". But all you people do is spew hate towards any group that doesn't share your beliefs. Oh and by the way what you have are just beliefs. That doesn't make them true. But i really do try to respect your beliefs (usually more respect than is ever shown to me), besides the fact that you guys don't exactly make it easy. How is telling someone that they're going to go to hell if they don't believe exactly what you believe in being compassionate or caring or showing them gods love? Honestly, I do believe that Christianity can be one of the paths to the divine, but so many of you are just hypocrites. Most Christians are "pro-life", yet at the same time are for the war. How the hell is that pro-life. If you're "pro-life", you need to love ALL life. Not just like minded people and an embryo that, what? Might someday grow up to be a republican? Maybe it's just double-think. Maybe you just need to learn to practice what you preach. Or at least just try to remember the next time you want to condemn people and say that god killed them for their wicked ways, you are not perfect either. You're far from it. Actually, according to you, the only one without sin was Jesus. But then again, remember from Sunday school, that whole original sin thing, being born of the flesh? Even though he was "the son of god", immaculate conception and all, he was still born of the flesh. So how is he without sin? Oh and by the way, i got kicked out of church and was told i was going to hell just for asking a few simple questions about the many contradictions that are rampant in the bible, questions that I thought a preacher, who has "studied" the bible all his life, should have been able to at least try and answer. So much for love, compassion, and all those other qualities you have for other Christians, but not for your fellow human beings.
