Though I don't normally cover current events, a Florida news story caught my eye this morning: A woman abandoned her newborn baby at an Ocala, Florida, hospital and will not face any criminal charges under the state's "safe baby" law, passed in 2000, which lets parents legally leave a newborn at a hospital or fire station. Thirty-five states have passed laws of this kind in recent years, according to the Child Welfare League of America, though I wonder if the message is getting out.
