A new law has been introduced in the U.S. Congress that would make putting false information in a domain name registration a felony punishable by five years imprisonment. This would be a great boon to anti-spam and other anti-fraud efforts, but should we really be taking up jail space that could be used for violent criminals? There are civil penalties that could achieve the same end. Also, there seems to be an easy way scammers can avoid prosecution: Register a domain with a foreign company and provide a fake foreign address.
