Journalist Karen Potter died of cancer on Friday at age 40. I knew her as a terrific boss -- she hired me to write Ask Ed Brice for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in 1993. Before that, she was one of the most well-regarded political reporters in Texas. In March 1990, when Texas gubernatorial candidate Clayton Williams made his infamous joke ("bad weather is like rape -- you might as well just sit back and enjoy it"), Potter was one of two female reporters present. The male journalists cornered them afterward, asking whether the joke was offensive. They both said yes and the story helped enshrine Williams as one of the greatest doofuses in the history of Texas politics.
