Columnist cringes over stolen mail

Robert X. Cringely appears to have been the victim of an identity-theft crook who signed him up for credit reports and then stole his mail. He suggests some steps to protect yourself:

The single greatest deterrent to identity theft is probably a paper shredder. Get one and use it for anything you throw away that contains personal information. Oh, and NEVER put outgoing mail in your mailbox for pickup by the carrier. Take it to the post office or to a local post office box.

These steps might seem drastic, especially the last one, unless you read the August Washington Post story on the double murderer who stole Michael Berry's identity.
