Snopes monkeyed around with Bin Laden rumor

Something that doesn't happen often: Snopes.Com, the Internet's most-trusted source for rumor debunking, made a big mistake in completely dismissing reports that Bin Laden family members were allowed to fly around the U.S. during a ban in air travel after Sept. 11. Snopes writer Barbara Mikkelson writes:

I owe Michael Moore an apology. ... during the ban on air travel, some Saudis (including members of the Bin Laden family) were transported by air to assembly points in the U.S. in preparation for their leaving the country. In an earlier version of this article, I ranted and raved about his avowing bin Laden flights had taken place while no one was allowed to fly.

Before anyone gives Snopes too much credit, note that they originally tried to cover up their error. A cache of the original post has been republished by The Agonist.
