Lycos, Amazon seek weblog trademarks

Lycos filed a trademark registration March 31 for Blog Builder, the weblog hosting software it offers on Tripod. The application, which can be viewed by browsing the trademark database of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, describes the services identified by the mark:

Creating and maintaining web sites for others; computer software design for others; data conversion of computer program data; installation of computer software.

Another company that is seeking a weblog-related trademark is Amazon.Com, which filed June 24 to register Blogcast for use in "personalized communication services, namely, transmission of a wide range of general interest information via the Internet."

Very sharp pickup. Lycos is at least somewhat understandable but do you think this is an indication that Amazon will be offering a blogspot/typepad-type service? Care to speculate on the meaning of blogcast?

I'd be surprised if Amazon got into hosting or personal weblogging -- it doesn't seem like the kind of business it gets into. The company also played around with a fake blogger recently.
