The Wilhelm Scream is a great bit of filmmaking lore that I hadn't heard of until today's Grouse. A scream recorded for the 1951 film Distant Drums has been lovingly kept alive by sound effects people, most notably Star Wars sound designer Ben Burtt, and heard in at least 66 films. (The one I remember best: Buzz Lightyear falling out of the window in Toy Story.)

I set up the Wilhelm scream as my primary error sound on Windows XP. As a result, it's likely to become as obvious to me in future films as the way movie trailers always begin with the words "in a world."
