My family visited Disney World this weekend, the last before our yearly passes are blocked for the summer. Riding to the Magic Kingdom, I saw a young man wearing a T-shirt tight enough to reveal that Disney keeps the monorails pretty cold. The shirt read "I only hang with pretties."

Entering the park, we were greeted by an unusually large number of people in red shirts, mostly clustered in groups of the same gender. We had unsuspectingly visited during Gay Days 2005.

This week, many an unsuspecting American family will travel to Walt Disney World, where they will find themselves at the epicenter of a recurring cultural earthquake.

Disney Gay Days 2004 photoEvery year religious conservatives like Mark Alexander write about the horror of families faced with the shocking realization that gay people attend theme parks. What will I tell the children?

I recalled the warning from the Christian Action Network to expect an orgy of depravity, and asked my mother to get the camera out.

Though we spotted several hundred people (and Winnie the Pooh) wearing red, there wasn't a single shirtless homosexual, nipple twist, or groin fondle to be seen. Apparently, the insidious gay agenda requires that they pass among us by feigning interest in riding rides, gorging on meals, and buying overpriced memorabilia. Most of them didn't even have smart haircuts.

The only public display of affection any of us witnessed was a middle-aged woman squeezing her husband's Charmin after Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin. Those seats inhibit circulation.

Perhaps the orgy of depravity was cancelled because the Tomorrowland Transit Authority, which my wife assessed at age 14 as the best make-out ride in the park, was broken down that day.

The only troubling moment that could be blamed on gays was getting stuck behind a sleuth of bears from Jacksonville headed to Tomorrowland. Getting a stroller around them in a hurry was like trying to score on a goal-line defense.

Disney World es mariposa?

I never realised Winnie the Pooh was gay.....

I thought some one did an article on Roger being a Mariposa...?

I heard they used to offer free non red shirts to other guests who showed up that day and felt uncomfortable. Not sure if it's true or if it was an urban legend.

So Winnie the Pooh was comfortable with it?

You sound mildly disappointed in the lack of depravity! :)

And here's a tip for getting around us bears -- toss some snacks their way. Or point to a nearby gift shop and say, "hey, there's a sale!"

Um. "Mariposa" means "butterfly." While I'm sure the author (and countless gay boys) have undergone amazing transformations from mundane beginnings into beautiful new forms in their life, I think the word you are looking for is "maricon."

;)

If i remember right, mariposa is slang for gay in spanish. Marimacha i think is lesbian.

Gore Vidal and James Jones have written about the true nature of American male sexuality.

Vidal told us about the male lodge in the "old boy " network of power in this country.

Why, those icons of American masculinity, the Marines themselves, have a strongly homoerotic culture.

I remember reading in the Times -Union (not my paper), that over 200 marines in San Diego had been busted for making gay porno flicks.

And James Jones told us what those American soldiers were doing in the Coliseum when the Allies occupied Rome.

The gay Vidal fought honorably in World War II, the butch icon "Marion" John Wayne stayed home and made movies.

So did Ronald Reagan.

This is for People Who Know who the hell Pericles was:

I forgot that Gore Vidal prefers to be called a "homosexualist".

He eschews the artificial division of people into "straight" or "gay", and offers the word to describe those who prefer sex with their own gender.

Vidal also agrees with Alfred Kinsey that a more realistic view of human sexuality is one that includes a continuum of preferences from completely heterosexual through bisexual to completely homosexual.

Most people are somewhere in the middle between the two extremes.

I hope the KKK doesn't come after me for saying that. I'll have to call the Marines.

James Dean Is Still The Mutant King

I love James Dean because he created his own mythology, which became the Mythos of disaffected youth in the mid-'50's.

It seems obvious that his power resides in his essential androgyny.

He's magnetic to men and women because he projected a smoldering sensuality that lives on in his luminous screen presence.

His persona reflected the tension and struggle between the two sides of his human, bisexual nature.

I subscribe to David Dalton's thesis that by an effort of Will which even Schopenhauer would have been proud of,

James Dean transformed himself into a mutant prototype for young people everywhere.

These new creatures inhabited a place called Teenage Culture.

Bow-tied prigs like George Will may sneer that James Dean was a model for all that's wrong with America today,

but I'd say that declining birth rates in "decadent old Europe" give the lie to his sniffiness.

James Dean's creation set the stage for the world-wide cultural upheaval of industialized nations that began in the '60's.

His very human bisexuality

O mi Gente,

Dios es Amor.

Amen.
