If You Had Told Me in 1986 ...

Trying desperately to find a silver lining in the loss of the House and likely loss of the Senate, rabid Republican blogger Hugh Hewitt writes:

... if you had told me in 1986 that 20 years later there would be a Republican president facing a 20 seat Democratic majority in the House and a two seat Democratic majority in the Senate -- and that the Soviet Union had collapsed -- I'd have cheered long and loud.

The Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. That's a very weird use of the "if you had told me x years ago" technique.

If you had told me in 1986 that 20 years later the Democrats would retake Congress -- and that the St. Louis Cardinals would be world champs -- I'd place a huge bet on them and use the winnings to create my merciless robot army.

If you had told me in 1986 that in 20 years religious fanatics would try to gut the Bill of Rights while introducing torture as formal US policy I would have...

I, for one, am going to be curious to see if the leadership of Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Howard Dean are going to be able to bring about the American Renaissance that they have promised us. To quote Glenn Reynolds, "Great election, kid. Don't get cocky.". And my advice to my new Congressman, Tim Mahoney: when looking for a place to live in DC, don't commit yourself to anything more than a two year lease.

Ignoring the built-in illogic of your premise (that was the point, right?), you'd do much better to set yourself up as a Las Vegas odds-maker. Follow the logic of that--you could buy a lot more robots. By the bye, would you be interested in some robots that have mercy?

To all the Dittoheads out there: Your boy lost you the Senate. Snerk.

Robot armys are passe', now it's teen female ninjas.......Damn dude, you are old!

Humpty Dumpty will fall again and this time he will be a Democrat. 12 years from now the same thing will happen all over again..

Robot armys are passe', now it's teen female ninjas.......Damn dude, you are old!

But then Rex, Black Mamba killed every last one of 'em with only a single Hattori Hanzo.

You can't expect a bunch of teenaged female ninjas to stand up against an Hattori Hanzo.

But you can if they're a robot army, too.

I actually predicted the end of the USSR. In 1985 in high school I suggested the USSR would be finished by the year 2000. When I was in East Germany at age 13, in 1978, I suggested it would never last, as well.

Ames Tiedeman

Who else thought these things?
