Name All Five Freedoms

In a telephone poll of 1,000 Americans reported by the BBC, 22 percent could name all five Simpsons but only 1-in-1,000 could name all five freedoms delineated in the First Amendment.

I'm curious to see whether weblog readers are smarter than telephone owners.

Without cheating, use the comments of this entry to name all five freedoms.

I'm already on record with my guess on the Drudge Retort, and I got three out of five, leaving off one that's an extreme personal embarrassment.

One of the winners will be randomly selected to receive a pair of Cordarounds, the world's first horizontal corduroy pants, on the condition that he or she agrees to model them for Workbench and write a weblog entry on what it's like to exercise your freedom of pantaloons.

To bicker with computer geeks over thngs that don't really matter nd prevent one from getting ot the real work at hand --- that's the one you're embarrassed over, right?

It doesn't surprise me that 1 in 1,000 people actually know this stuff. Who cares about what freedoms you're having striped away when you can come home from work and giggle at the fact that your family so closely resembles The Simpsons. "It's all gov't 'stuff' ... bah."

Humbug~

No need to cheat now, plenty of people have answered the original question. But seems to me everyone left out one important freedom; that being the freedom to absolutely bitch slap the hell out of the moron yakking into his/her cell phone forcing you to hear all about Uncle Fred's gall bladder operation or the latest about 'Amber and Joey'. Oh - M'Gawd!

I'll try to not cheat, typing this before looking at the rest of the comments.

I find it interesting that the order in the Constitution is 1) religion, 2) speech (not free speech, freedom of speech), 3) press, 4) assembly, and 5) petition, yet they are rarely mentioned in that order.
And the ACLU actually re-wrote the amendment, completely erasing religion and stating that free speech is the "first" right.

Religion, Speech, Press, Petition and Assembly.

Fiona's above post reminded Spud of the old mnemonic.

Be Well.

PS: Freedom of religion includes Freedom from religion too.

PPS: an extreme personal embarrassment.

Pls don't tell Spud ya fergot "Freedom of the Press"

Srsly? Wow!

If there are to be 5 freedoms (I am a Belgian, no American)

I assume they would be

  • Freedom of thought (and religion)

  • Freedom of expression (and speech)

  • Freedom of assembly

  • Freedom from want

  • Freedom from fear

Personally, I assume the following 5 freedoms in my vision for liberalism:

  • Freedom of thought (and religion)

  • Freedom of expression (and speech)

  • Freedom of assembly (which includes having law made by the people for the people)

  • Freedom of chance (which encompasses the freedom from want and freedom from fear)

  • Freedom of action with respect for all other freedoms (and thus also the law)

OBHWAMF!!! It's so true.

PS- LSWYTD ;)

And who won the contest anyway? And the lucky person gets...pants?!

freedom of speech
freedom of religion
freedom of press
freedom of assembly
freedom of petition

In order to help my 5th grade son to remember the 5 freedoms for a test, I arranged them into the pnemonic device of R.A.P.P.S:

Freedom of:
