I'm organizing an online fundraiser for Christy Corum, a Jacksonville girl who broke her neck in a 2002 jet-skiing accident and was paralyzed from the neck down. Pictured here with her niece, Christy turned 17 in October and needs an exercise bike, laptop and a wheelchair that can lift her to a standing position, according to her parents.
With a fund-raising goal of $5,000, we're going to produce a Creative Commons Calendar, a 12-month wall calendar that features 12 photos contributed to the Creative Commons. The calendars will be printed by the short-run publisher Lulu.Com on premium paper, 13.5 by 19 inches in size, unless a better deal can be found elsewhere. All money earned by the sales will go directly to the Corum family.
I've created a Yahoo mailing list for people who'd like to help.
A huge number of photos have been published on Flickr under a Creative Commons license that permit non-commercial reuse when you credit the photographer. There's a search engine for these photos, but I need help finding 12 great photos for the calendar that are available under Creative Commons. The more eyeballs the better.
The calendar will credit each photographer, describe the Creative Commons project and mark significant dates in the history of the effort. I'll write the text and prepare the calendar for publication, unless I can rope somebody into doing those tasks.
I also could use advice on the best way to accept direct online donations for the family.
Selling 500 copies at $10 above cost would hit the goal. If this is successful, I hope it becomes a template for a different cause each year -- one web geek plus 12 CC photos plus short-run printing equals Charity 2.0.
