Breaking News Coverage on Wikipedia Takes Flight

As I write this, a JetBlue Airways plane carrying 140 passengers is preparing for an emergency landing in Los Angeles.

The incident has been in the JetBlue entry of Wikipedia for more than an hour:

On 21 September 2005 at 7:55 PM Eastern Standard Time, the New York Times reported that JetBlue Airways Flight 292 was in the process of dumping fuel in preparation for an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport following a failure of the front landing gear during retraction.

When I majored in journalism, I don't recall any of my professors preparing me to compete with encyclopedias on breaking news.

JetBlue's planes feature a TV screen for each passenger. I wonder if the passengers on this flight were tuned in to the news coverage of the flight, and how it might have affected them.

This hits close to home, as my Love often travels on Jet Blue from S.F. to L.A (You know, I mean Oakland to Long beach....anyway.....)

And it is very interesting, at least to me, how technology now plays a big role in "up to the minute" journalism. And then there is the whole recent thing that planes are falling out of the sky right and left.

No wonder I'm so completely paranoid paranoid about flying!

Wikipedia was just a little slower in updating the entry to reflect the safe landing of the plane, as it wasn't until nearly 1:00am Eastern that the site was updated to read:

On 21 September 2005, JetBlue Airways Flight 292 performed an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport following a failure of the front landing gear during retraction. The plane landed after circling for 3 hours to burn fuel and lighten the aircraft. At 6:20pm, local time, the aircraft came to a stop without incident on runway 25L The only apparent damage to the plane on landing was the destruction of the front tires; the front landing struts held.
Pretty spectacular landing, but watching it on CNN live meant having to listen to Larry King ask his guest inane questions like "Is that fire?" as what was obviously a large ball of flame erupted from the front landing gear.

To the guest's credit, he didn't respond with "No, Larry, it's the divine light cast from the hand of our merciful God."

I wonder if the passengers on this flight were tuned in to the news coverage of the flight,

Yes. Yes they did.
